the new borne collaboration idea is making progress right from the start.
the first project "africana" has already seven participants and that is
enough for the beginning. according to everybody's personality the delivered
samples were all different and an unexpected speed is heating up the idea
delivering a common piece of music from a bunch of people who even don't
know each other. the second project is supposed to become a video collaboration
and here we were facing more difficulties than we had expected. main problem:
which format is the right one? normal video editing software doesn't accept
data saving real format and so we are thinking of collecting small scenes
of 1 minute duration in uncompressed avi or quicktime format. for more
details please check "collabs
project II".
u-she's single "sunday morning" is out now on emi germany. my lawyer
said to me that it was one of his hardest contracts he was involved in.
in fact it was one of the easiest contracts i was signing, it only took
us 6 weeks comparing with older contracts which took my manager about 1
year(!) to get through. nevertheless, "sunday morning" was supposed being
released one year ago and so it got promoted on the can solo projects tour
with u-she performing on stage within the gvoon project "magazine". after
the 4 concerts in germany we decided to abandon magazine and go our own
ways and this is one of the reasons why "sunday morning" was delayed.
people who know me a bit will be surprised that i was going to play
an old velvet track. u-she's voice was somehow demanding that and she "insistently"
insisted doing that piece. so i was meeting myself playing some of the
instruments as in the original track. usually a cover version is supposed
to sound different than the original but i preferred to get as near as
possible to the old version - this time.

after thirty years of innovating productions and inventions the legendary
can studio is now for sale. it certainly is one of the few magic places
where you can feel the breath of music and this is why all the various
musicians having worked there did appreciate it so much. the studio had
made a lot breaking through inventions by sheer necessity. from the very
beginning (1968) can decided never to book "ordinary" recording studios
as these studios didn't provide that specific playground can needed for
inspiration. from the first moment we started thinking in terms of "sampling"
though this word didn't even exist at that time. tago mago was such an
album proving what we were behind to. one of the main features was the
communication idea between the musicians. as the studio is based in a former
cinema we were setting up the technique rather in the middle of the place
allowing the musicians sitting around a bar and talking to the "bar keeper"
instead of being connected via intercom. communication had to be achieved
as easy as possible and the musicians should become a part rather of an
atmosphere instead being confronted with technical problems. this idea
of setting up technique more in a landscape than creating separate recording
and monitoring rooms was picked up by the big studio designers in the eighties.
after the can members decided to concentrate themselves more on their
own musical ideas and visions myself and the former roadie rene tinner
took over the studio and this was the beginning of a commercial successful
period when lots of different artists like david sylvian or bestseller
in germany marius mueller westernhagen were spending their time being and
working there. the installed equipment contains the most up to date recording
and processing devices plus a list of old analogue goodies like special
tube filters or the legendary hammond b3. <can

of the can studio studio>
the reason why the can studio is going to for sale is due to the departure
of rene tinner wanting to be free and independent and thus looking for
new kinds of surroundings.
