June 27
What a surprise.
When Can came to New York for a promotion tour on June 18, we
weren't sure how the new album 'Sacrelege' would do. The US
college radio stations were especially keen on taking this album on air
and so it got placed at No. 2 when we arrived. These kinds of radio
stations are something I'm missing here in Germany. They are free to play
what they want and they are influential. Mute Records' Mark Fotiadis
turned out to become a real Can fan or better: he had been all the time
I guess. This was the first time in the group's existence that a record company
boss stayed with us together more than 14 hours in one go
and not only for business reasons. Just thinking: where are the other
companies like Mute whose bosses are themselves actively into
music? Daniel Miller from Mute's London headquaters made one of the best
remixes on the CD and Mark was a dj for a long time in N.Y.C. so both
should know.
And we met Francois Kervorkian with Rob Reeves, who made this fantastic
'Blue Bag' mix we all love. Also for the first time, I had a chat with
Moby who is currently working on the new James Bond trailer. Last but not
least there was a long telephone call with Jon Hassell whom I know from
the old days in 1964 when we were studying with Karlheinz Stockhausen
and whom I met nearly 20 years later in Berlin during the recording of
David Sylvian's Brilliant Trees album. He seems to be fine, having
moved from N.Y. to L.A.
Then I attended to a sort of electronic arts event in one of
the pilers of Brooklyn Bridge (the Anchorage)- great venue and cool in summer time. That
could be a place to play live next time.
Now let's wait and see what Michael Karoli is doing on the new Can Live album
which will be expected 1998 when the group gets 30 years old. On this
anniversary, there will be a three day live festival in Berlin probably
in October where the members will perform solo or with other artists
belonging to the extended Can family.
